The short answer
Paying for a will template does not make it legally valid, and using a free template does not automatically make it invalid. The real questions are whether the document was designed for Irish law, whether it fits your family and estate, and whether you execute it correctly.
What can a free template do well?
A clear free form can be enough for someone who understands exactly what they need, checks that it is intended for Ireland and follows the execution requirements carefully. Price is not one of the validity tests in the Succession Act.
Where does a generic free form become risky?
- It was written for another jurisdiction.
- It does not deal with the residue or fallback beneficiaries clearly.
- It has no useful signing guidance.
- It treats every family situation as identical.
- The user starts deleting or inventing legal clauses to make a complex estate fit.
The danger is not that the file was free. It is that the user may not know which omissions matter.
What are you buying with a paid template?
A good paid template should reduce that uncertainty by providing an Ireland-specific structure, scenario-specific clauses and practical completion and signing guidance. It still does not replace individual legal judgement where the situation is complex.

When should you skip both free and paid templates?
Use a solicitor where there is a blended family, farm or business, foreign property, bespoke trust, significant tax planning, capacity or undue-influence concern, expected dispute, separation/divorce complexity or unusual provision for someone with statutory rights.
